Several years ago, maybe five or six, I wrote a few pieces for eHow to see how it would go. Mostly it did not do much, but I had one winner piece on how to easily make thick pumpkin puree from a whole pumpkin. It was popular in fall for a couple of years and it made me a reasonable amount of money from their pay-per-click system. Also it was fun to see whether I had gotten any clicks lately when I looked in on the site.
I was happy until Demand Media bought eHow. They stopped having people write how-to's and be paid per click. They offered me, get this, a one-time fee of two dollars and forty cents for each of my my existing few how-to's on eHow. That sum would give them all the rights. There would be no more pay-per-click system. I pulled out my pieces immediately and never looked back.

Just a heads up - Demand media is a content producer for sites such as
eHow. 450 word articles. Simple. Keyword dominated to rank reasonably
well. I don't know who gives the keywords (them or your research) but if
you're looking for a high-end market where you get paid XX per article,
this isn't it.
If you're looking to make money - then ask yourself how many of those kinds
of articles can you pump out in an hour @ $25 per article. And how many
hours a day you want to spend doing it. There's your number.
Just another way of looking at it.
