Re: bees and box store plants

And why they aren't using more native bees. I know I'm going out on a limb here, but have y'all seen Crown Bees' Indigogo campaign to increase native bees? https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/you-can-help-save-the-bees/x/10211002 We could use some help to spread the word.

Very interesting.

As an aside....I run into more and more rural gardeners and small farmers who are isolated from the large commercial farms. Many of them seem to be getting into beekeeping and raising their own honey and pollinators. Haven't found one who has had an issue with hive collapse. Don't get me wrong...not saying it doesn't exist as it clearly does and is a major issue...just saying that those beekeepers that I'm running into who are isolated from commercial farming operations don't' seem to have the problem. Yes, it's anecdotal, but sure makes me suspicious and wondering why commercial agriculture isn't catching on.

The following is circulating on Facebook today, spread about by beekeepers of my acquaintance. Thoughts, dear garden writers?

<<<<<<

GARDENERS BEWARE:
Many of the plants you buy at Home Depot and Lowe's may be treated with bee-killing neonictinoids. Because there's no clear labeling, many good-intentioned gardeners end up poisoning the very bees they are trying to help! http://ow.ly/xakJk (*Home Depot has indicated it is working on safer alternatives, but Lowe's has not yet responded).

That's just one of the many
things you'll learn from our fascinating photo essay featuring beekeepers and experts! Check it out >> http://ow.ly/xakJk The more you learn, the more you can help protect our bees!
