Re: Favorite Rose Books

Well! Many years back, I wrote one called <not my title! ah, marketing!> Beautiful Roses Made Easy (Cool Springs Press, 2003). It was issued in regional editions w/regional co-authors ranging from Andre and Mark Viette to Bruce and Sharon Asakawa.

It was "sponsored" by my former employer Jackson & Perkins, an early sign of how commercialism angles in (as many of you know, the magazine version of this is called "advertorial"). That said, all I was really asked to do for J&P was explain own-root roses, which they were moving into then.

I feel the book still holds up quite well, covering a lot of ground in 224 handsomely laid out pages: history/cultivation, selecting, planting, caring for/troubleshooting; the "regional" part followed with regional recommendations, rose selections and care.

A long-winded way of saying: I'm still pleased with this rose book and consider it useful! :)

Subject: [GWL] Favorite Rose Books

I'm writing an article about roses and plan to do a sidebar on the best
books about roses.

Which rose books do you consider to be the best on the market? They can be
a how-to, an overview of rose history and types, or anything else that you
feel tells the rose story well.

Please feel free to recommend more than one book.

I particularly like "Roses: A Celebration." Wayne Winterrowd edited 33
eminent writers' essays about their favorite rose. Included are people such
as Michael Pollen, the rosarian Peter Beales, Anne Raver, Anthony Noel,
David Austin, and Thomas Fischer. Original botanical paintings of roses by
award-winning Pamela Stagg enhance the text, making the book physically
beautiful as well as a good read.

Many thanks!
Catriona
