The product is the retail version of Merit and it has not been registered for use in all states. If you want to protect birches I think the best thing to do is to have a certified arborist apply the professional version to the soil around the birches in late fall...since it needs to be absorbed by the roots to be most effective this is the best time to apply it in the granular form. The product is not without drawbacks though and there is a moderate amount of controversy developing about its use in spite of Bayer's claims for its safety. It has stated to show up in ground water in some areas and it is suspected that it may have serious bad effects on many beneficials including bees. It's the same product, different formulation that's used for grub control in lawns...where it's very effective. Caveat Emptor.
