Rich brings up a valid point. I have images up on the Univ. of WI site that
I have lent them--they can use them only on the site--and I hold the
copyright. It is displayed on the web page. Sometimes individuals
contribute to research or photograph on-going projects, and they do it as
individuals. Any photography done is with the permission of the university,
but the images belong to the individuals. At least, that is how it works of
UW. I photographed several research projects and botanical events under
these conditions. I lend the work free to the university as payment for
access. I think my situation is fairly common.
