Re: Most Frequent Questions

Doreen,

I can't be sure what answer the ladies gave every time, since I didn't monitor their work minute by minute. But I have to say that most of them, if not all, took the tried and true path of telling them what would grow best for the season in their area, whether it was spring, summer, winter or fall. The western Bfrnch of Burpee which was then in Riverside, CA served all the western states and Hawaii and Alaska, so those bright ladies had to have lots of know how to field questions. I think most of the time they simply said, "Nothing we know of will do that, but here are some suggestions for your area for this season.....and you can find the seed on page ....of the current Burpee catalog."

It must have worked, since they often received letters from customers thanking them profusely for their help--and they did always bring these letters into my office for me to see. Of course they often conferred with me on some tough questions, and were in constant touch with Extension Service, and had a large library of garden books from which to seek answers. They did well, considering that those days were before e-mail and the internet, and before Master Gardeners were available.
