Title: Re: [GWL] Yardeners The late Isaac Asimov wrote a science column for a magazine for many years and he always started it out with a story of something about him or connected to him at the beginning of the column, then led into the column from there. Often, the item was related to how he was inspired to write that particular column. Just as often, it was nothing directly related, but was always personal, fun and interesting to read that you just had to go on into the main part of the column. That opening gave the reader a familiarity with him that made it feel like he was writing just for one person. Combine that with his ability to explain a subject clearly (one nickname of his was "the great explainer") and you have the best model that I've ever seen for anyone writing a column.

clearing that gets me the audience
An editor once contemptuously reject my column with the phrase, "Too much
throat clearing at the beginning." He missed the point. It is the throat
