Re: unexpected plants

Hello:

You wouldn't be expected to grow pears, peaches or nectarines in the central  to south Florida but with the new low chill fruits being developed by Chestnut Hill Tree Farm (Alachua, Florida) you can do just that. Contact them at 904-462-2820 or 800-669-2067 or see www.chestnuthilltreefarm.com.  We can also grow (to our surprise) Farfugium, Tricyrtus, Stokesia and Scabiosa to name a few.

We have "trialed" many plants presently rated to only zone 8 and found them to be nice here.  It seems that many of these things have simply never been tried this far south before.  By expanding the growing regions to warmer climates, a number of growers have increased their sales to warmer regions (and with 7,000 people moving to Central Florida every month the market is always growing).

Hope this helps!

[GWL] unexpected plants

I've been asked to write an article for a national magazine that discusses, by
region, plants you can grow that you might not expect to be able to.  For example,
there are hybrids of apples that will fruit without winter chill, making them viable
for coastal southern California.  Can people please give me some other ideas?   Many
thanks.  Catriona Tudor Erler
