Good point, Gene. I use a few perennials in containers, however, most clients are not very garden-smart and complain when they have a short bloom time. What natives might you suggest for foliage? I've used heurchera for contrast and edgeing. Any other suggestions?

Hello Lynn,
I am not familiar with the tender perennial and annual type lobelia, so no answer to your question about L. 'Hot Waterblue'. The lobelia I am familiar with, natives and native cultivars, generally require some shade and extra moisture ... bit of a general statement, but .... Have you played with our natives as container plants... certainly nice in flower and foliage. Bloom when the is a shortage of color in the garden.

- Good for you, Gene!
- The rumors of the demise of gardening as America's favorite pastime are surely not true.
- I have a question regarding Lobelia erinus "Hot Waterblue" It is described as "Tolerates heat and sun beter than other lobelias."
- I don't use standard lobelias in the containers that I do, because they don't hold up as soon as it gets hot here in Indiana. zn 5, 80-90F.
- Has anyone tried the Hot Waterblue...are they really more heat tolerant? They are sure lovely now...much paler blue, but I like the trailing habit a lot better.
