Re: duane's container exposition, certainly not adiatribe
I often find myself telling my listeners/readers how they can have that instant TV look in a way that makes sense. Planting summer annuals in the
container - well spaced - and then filling in with pansies, leaf-lettuce, or Osteospermum...plants that will be finished when the other plants are
ready to take over. And yes, we need to continue to remind them that sometimes, OK - often, a single plant in an pleasing container is more
attractive and useful than that instant-effect mixed planter that they saw on HGTV.
The larger issue is reminding our audiences again and again that plants are living things and they change over time. Reminding them that the
pictures that are in magazines and books (ours included!) show the garden at that particular moment, not every day of the year, and that the garden
was not created instantly. Reminding them about the pleasures of process, and daily discovery.
The theme music to my radio program is an Irish fiddle tune played by Eileen Ivers, but I often think I should use The Rolling Stones "You Can't
Always Get What You Want."
