John -- thanks for your Latin lesson.

I hope you were not being mean or snotty. That's how the message came
across...as insulting to my Midwestern "reality." If you don't know
what I mean, substitute the word Californian for Midwestern.

jems,

Sorry I touched a raw nerve. I used the word "Midwestern" only because you
did. Actually, I thought I was apologizing a bit for a bookish explanation
that you probably would find farfetched as the source of your customers'
inquiry. Apparently I was correct.

I am descended from good Midwestern stock. My mother's family came to New
Mexico from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and my father's from Salina and Parsons,
Kansas. I still have many relatives in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio and many
fond memories of visits there. My grandmother graduated Magna Cum Laude
from Ames, so I have no prejudice regarding lack of intelligence in the
Midwest. I am a relatively recent transplant to California, and I have moved
around enough in my life not to feel any particularly fervent patriotism for
any region.

I certainly meant no disrespect. I regret that you interpreted my remarks
that way.
