To set eveyone's mind at ease, let me explain what I do as list 
administrator.  I filter every post, and no spam goes through to listserv 
members.  Spam comes in, but it's quarantined and deleted.  Because we are a 
privately-owned listserv, I can do this.  I'm also very diligent about 
preventing spammers access to this list by subscribing.  You may have been a 
victim of my inquisitiveness.  I ask a potential subscriber their real name, 
where they live and about their connection to the garden writing field. 
Spammers don't answer my queries.

If you are getting spam with names similar to those on this list, I suggest 
two things.
1.  It may be coincidence, because spammers are now using all manner of 
names to avoid your spam filter.
2.  You may have a 'bot' or worm in your system that is recording your 
keystrokes to harvest names.

I'd bet it's the first reason, though.
