Region III Meeting
May 24 and 25, 2007
What you'll see:
Cleveland Botanical Garden and biennial Flower Show
The centerpiece is always the spectacular, all-new gardens
created especially for the show by the area's top landscaping talent.
"Rhythm & Hues" is the theme for 2007, which celebrates the timeless
marriage of the garden and music. Gardens will be inspired by
classical, jazz and blue grass music.
Originally modeled after the Royal Horticultural Society's
famed Chelsea Flower Show, the Cleveland show is the only outdoor
flower event honored with major show status by the National Garden
Clubs Inc., and Garden Club of America. We'll have lunch, orientation
about the CBG and tour the flower show. (Host: Peter Vertes, CBG)
Holden Arboretum
Founded in 1931 on 100 acres, the Holden Arboretum has grown
to 3,500 acres resplendent with more than 20,000 accessioned plants
representing 2, 199 species, 25 ponds, six major gardens and more
than 20 miles of hiking trails.
Known for collections of magnolias, conifers, crabapples, nut
trees, specimen trees, viburnums and the Arthur S. Holden Sr., hedge
lilac. Well have dinner at the Holden. (Host: Mary Glauser, Holden)
Private garden, Kirtland Hills, Ohio
This well-designed and carefully maintained garden is a plant
lover's dream. Visitors will be guided through diverse plantings,
many with four-season interest. We'll stroll along winding paths
around two ponds and under a canopy of unusual trees. The garden is
known for rhododendrons, magnolias, primrose and many other
spring-blooming perennials, which grace the hillsides.
Photography allowed; however, no published photos or articles
on the garden or identification of the owner name and address without
advance written permission. (Hosts: Eliot Paine and Bill Hendricks)
Klyn Nurseries
When Klyn Nurseries was founded in Mentor, Ohio, by Gerard
Klyn in 1921 the primary crop was roses, which remained a part of
production and sales until 1972. (Today there is no commercial
production of tea roses in Ohio.) Gerard Klyn passed away in 1966,
and the Mentor properties were sold. The 256-acre Perry County
location is what remains of the original nursery. Today Klyn
Nurseries produces more than 500 acres of crops in the field and 40
acres of containers. The inventory has increased to more than 1,600
varieties of plants, with 80- to 90 percent propagated internally.
Well-known plantsman Bill Hendricks will guide a wagon-tour
that gets a first-hand view of Klyn's production of perennials,
grasses and container trees, where you'll see many rare and unusual
species. From there we will visit the nearby bamboo garden, passing
two irrigation ponds that are used to breed koi and goldfish for the
landscape trade. (Host: Bill Hendricks)
Lake County Nursery
One of Ohio's largest nurseries has more than 800 acres on 20
farms and more than 1,000 different plants in production. Known
nationally and internationally for new plant introductions, LCN holds
more than 100 trademarks and plant patents. Many of their new plant
introductions are featured in a variety of uses in the nursery's 2
_-acre, Mary Elizabeth Garden, adjacent to the office.
The garden offers sneak peeks at future introductions and
varieties under test and evaluation. There's also an evergreen
collection from plantsmen Pete Girard and Joe Stupka, and a garden of
ornamental grasses. After seeing what's new, we'll take a look back
with some rare historical displays. Celebrating 60 years in the
nursery business, host Jim Zampini is a wealth of plant knowledge.
We'll have lunch at Lake County Nursery and pick up plants to take
home and try in our gardens. (Host: Maria Zampini)
