Absolutely!
I came back from a trip to southern Arizona with a suitcase full of
cuttings, seeds, and full plants . Had to buy a new suitcase, but they're
five bucks over the border. They are great for container culture here in
Pennsylvania. The plants, not the suitcases. Hmmm -- maybe the suitcases
too.
OTOH, I have this neurotic obsession to grow plants they tell me I can't
grow here in Pennsylvania. Brugmansias have been mentioned, and they are
stunning (particularly Shredded White, which for some reason has not caught
on). They are also water gluttons. I grow my brugmansias in "self-watering"
containers -- specifically the Rubbermaid Anywhere Garden, which is great
but I don't think is any longer on the market -- and they still have to be
filled daily.
But there is one place where water holding crystals do work, and fessing up,
I lied when I said I don't use them. In moss hanging baskets they can make
the difference between life and death. You still have to water quite
regularly, but without water crystals, "regularly" often isn't enough. The
additive gives you an edge.
