We use a Fiskars tool, the Upright Weed Remover
http://www.fiskars.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=1
0001&langId=-1&catalogId=10101&categoryId=10273&productId=10563 to pull
out Canada Thistle when they are still small. It works very well,
although I think it was intended for things like dandelions. Once the
thistle taproot is really long, this doesn't work and we use a
long-handled shovel to dig them out.
While we don't have fields of thistle, we have a lot because, one year,
we thought it was so wonderful how they attracted so many goldfinches.
How bad can it get, we thought? Well, we're still pulling them out every
spring. Using the Weed Remover early in the season, it is fairly easy to
stay on top of them.
Regards,
Lois
