Reusing Old Columns
Fran asked: " Where do I go with my columns now?"
Columns can be recycled or rewritten for websites and blogs. They can be used for newsletters that you send out by email to a mailing list. (Such newsletters are often used to "sell" other services or products along with providing information in articles.) As we all know, it's ALL happening online, so make those pieces work for you there.
You can use them in your writer's portfolio.
If they have a unique viewpoint or fresh take on a subject you could compile them into book form and approach publishers. If they have a regional focus you might want to self-publish a compilation. Regional books pretty much sell themselves and because you're dealing with a limited area the distribution isn't overwhelming for the author/publisher.
Looking for radio or TV appearances? You could re-write them for recording (writing for radio or other audio is different than writing for a reader) and make a cd to send out to the media.
But before thinking about all of that, Fran, ask yourself the following: Where do I want to be, and can these columns help get me there? Because we all need to focus on where we want to go, not on what we've already done. Maybe these columns can be a stepping stone to the next level....but they might just be a distraction that keeps you looking toward the past.
all the best,
C.L.
