Re: Selection

Duane
I really think it depends on what folks want. If they want Knockout roses
then Home depot is fine. If they want ground covers they can go to the walmart
that sells stepables or whatever. If they get hooked on gardening though they
will find that wooly thyme is available from most herb growers, where it is
probably cheaper, and more original/heirloom roses are available from mail
order.

I have found over the years though that most nurseries get most of their
money from landscape and are guys - hence the boring selection. If you can find
strictly perennial nursery (usually operated by women) then they will offer
the less mainstream products as well as the banal options.

Alas, like independent bookstores, independent nurseries are a dying breed.

I tell my readers to buy locally whenever possible, but if the locals have
nothing more than half a dozen dead common plants, I'm going go back to
pushing mail order.

I know those who live in or near real major metropolitan centers have places
they can go to find the less banal, but are others in less urban climes
experiencing this?
