Re: June 21 Chicago Get Together
Hi Doreen,
I take it Mayo and Doug are coming down for a visit. Considering one
has an 8 hour drive (or a flight)( and a few side stops) to MO ahead of
them the following day, Saturday might be just too close.
As much as it would be entertaining and enlightening to network, I
appreciate your volunteering to set this up, but I for one, will have to
decline.
Tomorrow is the Midwest Groundcover open house. Nona has pulled out,
and it looks like Nina might have also declined. I have that
appointment close by, so I had decided to go. Now I'm wondering if
that was a wise decision. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. Will let you
know if there was anything of interest.
How was the Memorial Day Weekend? Do anything special?.
And I actually got to spend a bit of time working in the yard.
Our local Home Depot was like Nirvana! Talk of healthy plants,
incredibly low prices, and vast selection...it was almost unbelievable!
They had half the parking lot cordoned off, with more plants than I had
ever seen in a big box. Hanging baskets for 9 bucks. Flats for 10.
Tropicals for $12 to $24. I know one should support the local nursery,
but with this great quality, quantity, and price, my budget got a lot
more for its buck...plus a lot more bucks stayed in my wallet. Plus,
none of the nurseries around here even offer Dragon Wing Begonia any
more. Not so at HD...full cascading 10" baskets for the aforementioned
9 bucks.
I haven't been to Lowe's or Menard's this spring as yet. Have you seen
anything of interest there? I wonder if it's just this HD -- or are all
the big boxes offering exceptional plants as loss leaders?

Two of our listserv members are coming down from Canada that week and would like to visit with others in the Chicago area.
