PECO Green Roof and PHS Philly Trolley Tour

Dear Friends:

Alan Jaffe from PHS has extended a very wide invitation to enjoy a
FREE tour of green projects in the city of Philadelphia. We tried to
arrange this for the recent Region II meeting at the Philadelphia Flower
Show but snow prevented us from climbing up to the brand new PECO green
roof. At this date, most of the plantings should be completed. It's a
not-to-be-missed opportunity if you live anywhere close to the city!

Also, PHS has added several extra tour sites on a trolley tour for
an incredible event. The details are described below. If you have any
questions, call Alan at the number or Email that he gave.

Invitation to the Green Tour

Dear Environmental/Gardening Writer:

We are pleased to invite you to a special tour of some of the most exciting
greening projects in Philadelphia, culminating in a visit to the new PECO
green roof. The tour, via Victorian-style open-air trolley, will make stops
at unique community gardens, restored neighborhood parks, innovative storm
water management sites, and treasured public landscapes, all projects of the
Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's renowned urban revitalization program,
Philadelphia Green.

WHEN: Wednesday, June 10

WHERE: Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, 100 N. 20th St., Philadelphia,
Fifth floor, Auditorium

Schedule:

12:30 p.m. Lunch (courtesy of PECO) and presentation on Philadelphia Green
by PHS Executive Vice President J. Blaine Bonham Jr.

1:15 p.m. Board the trolley for a tour of Philadelphia Green project sites
in neighborhoods throughout the city.

4 p.m. Presentation at PECO, 23rd and Market Streets, and visit to the green
roof.

The 45,000-square-foot green roof is the largest ever installed on an
existing building in an urban setting in Pennsylvania. The roof, which grows
a variety of sedums and other plants without conventional soil, saves on
cooling and heating costs, reduces air pollutants and the urban heat-island
effect, and absorbs 60 percent of the 1.5 million gallons of annual rainful
on its surface. A PECO representative and a green roof consultant will be on
hand to answer questions and explain the installation and benefits of this
major stride for Philadelphia's sustainable future.

We hope you can attend this fascinating and inspiring tour. Please RSVP by
June 3 to Alan Jaffe, PHS Public Relations Manager, 215-988-8833,
