There is no love lost between me and Douglas and all his cousins. Sight unseen, I would accuse him in a heartbeat. I have witnessed countless situations where these critters have bitten off tops of many plants about to flower, only to leave them on the ground and run away. They don't even do this for survival: mean and nasty is the best I can say about them. Forget cute, adorable, etc.!
A good spray of red pepper wax (the commercially available one, not homemade) on the plants has been an effective deterrent for my band of marauders.
