Nan, While I have not heard of this - can you give us some product names? There must be big bucks in manufacturing potting soil with fertilizer. I suggest the reason for using calcined clay is it doesn't blow out the fertilizer when the temperatures climb into the 80s or higher as does polymer coat product such as Osmocote. Are you sure the product is not Turface - it's baked to a hotter temperature and is more stable than kitty litter? Turface also improves drainage and aeration in the soil, potting or otherwise.
