RE: [GWL]: Pronunciation of plant names on-line
Sandy,
I too wonder about Fa-tha-jillia (that's how I pronounce it. I
certainly can't spell it!) and Hue-ka-rauh-- check out
www.gardening.com's Plant Encyclopedia. They pronounce the names
on-line. Very cool.
Anyone coming to GWAA please stop by our booths #49 -- 52 -- and meet
the folks from PRO-MIX Potting & Seeding Mixes, The Conard-Pyle Co.
(Star Roses), Campania (connoisseurs of fine garden
accessories),TulipWorld.com (named Quill & Troll Best Electronic
Media,)Year of the Rose from ARS and GWAA Award winners. And meet
IMPACT's newest addition -- the Garden Media Group, just launched to
serve the L&G industry. We'll have lots of story ideas to discuss.
And on Friday -- get there early to have your fortunes read by Rose.
See you all in Sunny Florida,
Suzi McCoy

Subject: RE: [GWL]: Pronunciation & website question
Good morning,
Sandie brought up an interesting topic. Being a self taught gardener I
always wondered if I was pronouncing those long names correctly.
Heuchera is
one of the ones I've heard several different ways.
Two years ago I did a lecture in Tennessee where Darryl Apps (formally
of
Longwood Gardens) and Diana Grenfel (a garden writer from England) were
also
lecturing. I admitted that I was nervous about my pronunciations and
Diana
was very kind. She told me that many people say things differently and
she
pronounced Heuchera the same way I did. (HEW-ke-ra) When I asked how to
say
Clematis, Darryl recited a poem. All I remember is the last line but is
was
"but I would be reMISS if I did not call it ClemaTIS."
This past weekend I lectured in Atlanta and fell in love with Sasanqua
camellia's that were in bloom. Does anybody grow them in similar
conditions
as we have here on Long Island? I'm in a cold pocket along the spine of
the
island, zone 6b with quite a bit of spring freeze and thaw and freeze
and
thaw...
One more thing (yes, once the cork is pulled out it's hard to put it
back
in), for a year I wrote the Q & A column of a website. I've heard
nothing
from them since the early summer when the editor left the company. They
haven't replied to any e-mails and the site hasn't been updated in
months.
The strange thing is the link to my home e-mail is still active and I'm
still getting questions. At this point I'm still answering them,
especially
ones that don't require serious research. How long would you continue to
answer this mail? Of course I haven't seen a paycheck since June.
