[GWL]: GWAA Symposium Report--Short Version
I just got home from 6 days in Orlando and will give all a quick rundown.
First, we missed most of you. And you missed perfect Florida weather--78F
days and 55F nights, low humidity (for Florida that is), an array of tourist
attractions, fine dining, pertinent gardening exhibits, interesting speakers
and a good bit of partying. A normal GWAA Symposium is about 550 to 700
people. This year only 371 people registered, and some of those did not
attend. I guestimate that there were about 340 people in Orlando. That did
not dampen our enthusiasm or good time.
Second, let's all congratulate Doug Green and Graham Rice, two listserv
members who won Quill & Trowel awards this year. Doug won for his book, and
Graham for web site work. Well done, guys!!
At our listserv meeting, we got to match email personas to faces. Those
attending were Jeff Lowenfels (AKA Crazy Cousin Jeff, according to Pat Stone
editor of Greenprints mag and the book Chicken Soup for Gardeners), Jeff
Ball, Ellen Zachos, Renee Vintzel Loridas, Bill Adams and wife Debby, Betty
Earl, Carol Wallace and me. If I forgot someone, please jump in here and
yell at me for poor memory due to many Scotch and Sodas.
I'll let others also write later about details of the symposium. I'm too
tired after spending much of my time with the "Back of the Bus" guys and
misbehaving. Seattle next year promises to be even better for parties,
controlled chaos, garden touring and learning more about our profession. So
start saving your money now and we can all meet on Aug. 3, 2002 at the
DoubleTree Hotel bar.
