Re: [GWL]: Self-Publishing Columns

Penne and others, if you never signed a contract and were not an employee, there is no question that you retain all the rights to your newspaper columns. You have various options of self publishing and finding a publisher. The self-publishing route is not that hard. To do it without making too many mistakes, get some books on the subject. One of the good ones is "The Self-Publishing Manual: How to Write, Print and Sell Your Own Book," by Dan Poynter. I happen to use the 12th edition, in paperback. The price is $19.95. It may be less on www.Amazon.com.  Bookstores and libraries will have similar books, but look for the newest copyright dates because some of the information is time-sensitive. There's a ton of this kind of info out there, so don't get talked into spending a fortune for it. Poynter has a website, www.parapublishing.com . (He and some others make a great living telling people this kind of thing, hmmm.)

I have written ten years of newspaper columns, some of which I would like to incorporate into a book.  There was no written agreement or signed contract between me and the newspaper.  What , if anything, do I need to do in order to use some of these columns again?  Can anyone out there help me?   Thanks.  Penne Curmode
