Massachusetts Horticultural Society to Award 2001 Honorary Medals
Wellesley, MA - The Massachusetts Horticultural Society will award its 2001
Honorary Medals at a ceremony on January 23, 2002, at the Fairmont Copley
Plaza, Boston. The Honorary Medals are among the nation's most prestigious
awards recognizing outstanding achievements and contributions to the field
of horticulture. MHS proudly announces the honorees for 2001:

The George Robert White Medal of Honor
Struck of coin gold and considered the highest horticultural award in
America, this medal has been given since 1909 to the individual or firm who
has done the most to advance the interest of horticulture. This year's
winner is Adrian Bloom, president of Blooms of Bressingham in Norfolk,
England. Bloom has personally introduced many American gardeners to the
unique varieties of perennials for which he and his father, Alan, are
internationally known, including the recent Campanula 'Chettle Charm' and
Heliopsis 'Lorraine Sunshine.'

The Thomas Rowland Medal
Since 1927, this medal has recognized individuals who have shown
exceptional skill in horticulture. The 2001 winner is Steven Spongberg, the
first Director of the Polly Hill Arboretum on Martha's Vineyard. He is a
distinguished botanist and author of the highly acclaimed Reunion of Trees,
a treasure trove of information about the eighteenth and nineteenth
centuries for amateur and professional gardeners alike.

The Jackson Dawson Memorial Award
This award honors individuals who have shown exceptional skill in the
hybridization and propagation of hardy woody plants. The 2001 honorees are
David and John Miller of J.E. Miller Nurseries of Canandaigua, NY, a
nursery specializing in fruit plants. There they maintain more than 100
varieties of antique apples for preservation and grafting wood, and
propagate more than 100 true-to-type varieties of grapes.

Gold Medals
First struck from dies made in 1845, the gold medal is MHS's highest award
recognizing those who have eminently promoted horticulture or have shown
outstanding service to the Society. Honorees for 2001 are:
. The Pennsylvania School of Horticulture for Women (presently the
Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture, Ambler College of
Temple University), is one of the oldest schools of horticulture in this
country.

. "Art in Bloom," a 25-year-old program of Boston's Museum of Fine Arts
that promotes the synergy existing between flowers and art, resulting in
the enhancement of both.

. Lise Cormier, creator and Executive Director of Mosaiculture
International Montreal, and Parks Director for the City of Montreal.

. Victor De Rosa, Natick, MA, orchid hybridizer and long-time exhibitor at
the New England Spring Flower Show.

. Wanda and Richard Macnair, Cambridge, MA, exemplary volunteers for the
Massachusetts Horticultural Society, serving as members of the Committee on
Nomenclature for more than 15 years.

. Faith Tiberio, Sherborn, MA, for her tireless work on behalf of the
Society as chairman of the Elm Bank Campaign.

. Pieter van Loon, Moerkapelle, The Netherlands, owner and founder of
Hollandschap-Eurolandscape, a landscape architecture and urban planning
firm in Holland. He is also the floor plan designer of the New England
Spring Flower Show and Master Plan Designer for Elm Bank.

. Natalie Wolf, West Newton, MA, for service to MHS as a trustee, as head
of numerous New England Flower Show committees, and as a teacher.

Silver Medals
A replica in silver of the large gold medal, this award honors individuals,
institutions, or firms for noteworthy horticultural accomplishments in the
field of horticulture, or for outstanding service to the Society. The 2001
honorees are:
. David Barnett, Vice President of Operations and Horticulture at Mount
Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA, for his many and noteworthy horticultural
accomplishments at the nation's first horticultural cemetery.

. Robert and Jean Cain, owners of Norway Farms in Norfolk, MA, and
consistent New England Spring Flower Show exhibitors, for their generosity
of time and plant material for Elm Bank.

. Paul Kelly, head of Landscaping Services at the Federal Reserve Bank of
Boston, for his outstanding landscaping of the Federal Reserve Plaza and
for spearheading numerous horticulturally related civic programs for the
Federal Reserve.

. Louis Raymond, Hopkinton, RI, designer for the New England Spring Flower
Show, for his efforts to engage, excite, and motivate exhibitors to do new
and different things to enliven the flower show displays.

The medals will be formally bestowed at a gala dinner at the Fairmont
Copley Plaza Hotel, 138 St. James Avenue, Boston. A reception to meet the
award winners begins at 6:00 p.m., with award presentations to follow at
6:30 p.m. Reporters and photographers interested in covering this event
