Beating A Dead Horse
In a fit of nothing better to do, I did a series of google searches on what C
word is used regarding peppers.
In each case, I looked at the listings only (did not open the pages) for the
first five screens.
The results:
Searching under "chili" revealed two sites dealing with the plants.
Searching under "chile" revealed no sites dealing with the plants.
Searching under "pepper," of those using a C word for plants there were 5,
all spelled "chile."
Searching under "capsicum," there were numerous sites dealing with the
plants. Of them the following spellings were used: chilli, 1; chillie, 2;
chili, 2, and chile, 1.
What does this prove? Probably not a damn thing. But it supports my
contention that, as writers, we use whichever version is wanted by the
market.
I know one thing for sure. Based on a recent assignment, the editor of Mother
Earth News uses "chile" to refer to the plants. So that'll certainly be my
usage.
