RE: String bean = pole bean?
Well, I'm glad there is at least one garden writer who knows the answer to
Nan's question. Tom is correct. String beans are a generic term for EITHER
pole beans or bush beans. The only reason we have bush beans at all is that
farmers couldn't find a machine to harvest pole beans and pole beans provide
product for several months while bush beans are finished in 10 days. String
beans comes from the 30's and 40's. The word could also include either
green beans or wax beans. As a kid, I had to de-string the green beans and
the wax beans for my grandmother's canning operation. Stringless green
beans came out in the 60's I believe and that form of green bean came out in
the pole bean and the bush bean habits. Some folks call them "snap beans"
because if you pick them at the right time they snap when you break them in
two.

I don't think of string beans as necessarily being pole beans. Certainly
there are bush beans that are string beans too.
