Garden writing assumes some horticultural knowledge and writing skills, but not necessarily a degree in horticulture or journalism.
It is very helpful for someone in our profession to have more than just the rudimentary knowledge of computers in general and specific word processing and desktop publishing software. Most writers find it invaluable to have photographic skills using film and digital cameras. Experience using photo retouching software is increasingly a necessary skill a writer should acquire if they supply photos with their text.
Knowledge about how our efforts are published, marketed, and promoted is important for writers, especially with electronic distribution via the www. Web authoring and email software have become another tool that members of the GWL should investigate. Distribution of our work via CD and DVD disks rather than printed paper is the next major change in our profession.
If my assessment of the tools of the trade is on target, I suggest that our experiences and thoughts associated with these topics should be acceptable. Those who aren't interested in these topics have a choice to delete the message they don't wish to read just as we who read the message can choose not to respond.
Just my opinion so please don't flame me.
