on promoting kitchen gardens and kitchen garden writing

Dear Garden Writers,

This is my first post to this list.  I am a garden writer myself in that I have written articles on gardening for local newspapers and for the web.  The hat I wear the most is that of a food epicure and activist.  It's in this capacity that I've started up a new non-profit organization called Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI).  I am writing to both introduce you to KGI and to tap into your media and outreach experience.

First, allow me to give you a short sum-up of who we are and what we trying to do.   KGI is a newly-formed public charity registered in Maine with a small, but growing list of friends and supporters from around the world.  We are governed by an international, volunteer board of which I am the president.  Our mission is to celebrate and promote home-grown, home-prepared foods in their many international forms.  Although we are still quite young, we are offering a number of resources to kitchen gardeners including: profiles of gardening gastronomes from around the world; online information on cooking, gardening, and sustainable grocery shopping, and a free monthly newsletter.   We also organize International Kitchen Garden Day which we refer to as "a global celebration of the most local of foods".  Though many of our activities revolve around old fashioned country pleasures, KGI is not your typical gardening club.  When we're not singing the praises of a properly grown tomato, we're looking at the big picture issues of the food system through articles on obesity, sustainable farming, world hunger, and genetically modified organismsYou can find full information about us on our website: www.kitchengardeners.org

I'd love to hear from any of you who have ideas about how we can reach out to and grow a support base via the gardening press.  I've had some success in getting KGI mentioned in a couple of newspapers, but I still consider myself a novice.  Any help or insight you "the pros" can offer would be greatly appreciated.  I realize that this is the off season for most kitchen gardeners, but not necessarily for garden publications/editors/writers, I imagine.  Is that right?

Sincerely,

Roger Doiron
