The General Theory of Not Gardening
Last week the Library of Congress announced the first winner of its John W.
Kluge Prize for lifetime achievement in fields in which Nobel prizes are not

The winner, philosopher Leszek Kolakowski, wrote an essay for Harper's
Magazine (Nov. 1990) titled The General Theory of Not Gardening
