online publishing

In looking for a book illustrator, I stumbled into the world of online comic
strips.  If you've never seen any, they are amazing in scope and quality, to
put it mildly.  
   One artist came up with something that I haven't heard of in this exact
form, before.  In addition to his online comic strip, (he also does two
strips that are published in newspapers) he has written a novel.  Instead of
having it printed, he is offering it by subscription to his online readers.
For $10.00 he will send the novel by e-mail, one chapter a week.
   I can see drawbacks to the system, but it seems like a workable plan if
you already have an established audience, as he does.  If you want to see
