John - I've checked out both the Oxford and Cambridge Guides to English Literature as well as several of the major editions of Bartlett and Magill's quotations. (book versions - not Internet) Nothing there. I did find a reference to a "terrible gate" at the ibiblio (gutenberg project) site but the reference was not yours.
I used several of the meta-search engines and they didn't pull anything either.

Good quest.
