RE: Organic Fertilizers

Marge:

It's obvious that you have soil in which to grow. Actually, I grew up in
Maryland, so I know you do--it might have a high clay fraction, but it
has a great CAT, so organic matter and compost are enough to keep it in
good shape. But in other places, people are not so fortunate. I've grown
in places where there were only a couple of inches of highly soil over
bedrock or it where there was nothing, I mean nothing, but sand. In
those cases, you need to add fertilizers.

But if you've got soil, and you've built it up to the point where its
nutrient content is pretty balanced, I agree that most ornamentals don't
need fertilizers. I've even grown (farmed) acres of veggies on soil to
which I only added compost, limestone, and the occasional 1/2 ton/acre
of crab shells.

Best,

Miranda Smith
