Title: [GWL] Christmas gifts for the vegetable gardener Hello Andrew,
Although your deadline is brutal I like seeing food gardening encouraged this way. I've seen only good suggestions and have a few additions. Container gardening is very strong and our best selling gift item is McGee and Stuckey's The Bountiful Container, A Container Garden of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits, and Edible Flowers. This book often sells with one or more of our container gardening collections or salad garden collections. The fact that I'm one of the authors probably plays a role. A Meyer Lemon tree, and for the Thai cook a Kaffir Lime tree are popular items. For the tea loving gardener, a true tea plant, Camellia sinensis, perhaps with a book on tea or simply some interesting teas for winter warmth and instant gratification. If you have children who garden, we have a collection called Global Gardening - Discovering the World through Food. Gardening with children is a powerful teaching tool especially when it includes a little history and geography. We accompany this collection with information on the origin and history of these varieties. Several good tools and the new pop-up green houses, have been mentioned. I'd add the Pop-up Starter-House, a nifty cold frame that fits right over a 4' x 8' raised bed. I also like several hand tools, the Soft Flex Pruner, a bonsai type set of scissors with cushy handles, the Diggit Garden Tools which have cushioned handles and well-tooled, narrow blades to get out the toughest weeds, and the EZ Digger/Ho-Mi , an ancient Korean tool that is very versatile.
The 2005 Nichols Garden Nursery catalog is now available, we got the first copies yesterday. I'd like to mail a catalog to everyone on this list. Just send me an email with your postal address. Everything I've mentioned is available from Nichols and they are items used as gifts over and again. Glad to see the renewal of energy and participation on this list.
