I think that is the key - if one uses the translator as just one of the many tools available and be aware of its limitations.  I would never use a computer translation as a direct quote, but as background for a subject, they are useful tools.
 
I am curious, however, as to which other tools garden writers find useful.  Clearly the 'net' is used, but has limitations and has as much misinformation as it has good information.  Magazines generally are alittle basic for research (there are exceptions). Are books still the prime source used by writers?
