I use notepad to write my own (very simple!) site.

Like you, I want to create a multipurpose site.

Last week I installed Wordpress. I wanted to change the
default permalinks to make them a more search-engine
friendly by using the post name for the link. Wordpress
has directions on how to do this:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Permalinks

However the directions were beyond my quite limited
technical ability (I know html, xhtml and some css -- and
that's about it.). The direction included sentences like
"You must chmod the .htaccess file to 666 to allow
WordPress to write its rules to it automatically."

So I wondered if there are advantages to using blogging
software that would make it worth my while to get someone
to help me set it up.
