Re: Regional Book for Florida Newcomers
Hi Betty:
If any of the book reviewers live in Florida and want a warm human-interest
story to go with it - I've got one.
In 2004 Hurricane Charlie destroyed the half-acre ivy garden which was a
part of Sugar Mill Botanical Gardens (near Daytona, Florida) and housed the
regional collection of the American Ivy Society. The County-owned
Botanical Garden restored much of the gardens, but didn't have enough money
for the Ivy or the Butterfly Gardens.
A 17 years old Boy Scout, Nick Ssault, going for his Eagle Badge decided to
undertake this enormous project. He raised the money from the Community,
from the Police Officers Fund, from the local concrete company - he even
got the local Poker Club to have an Ivy Night. The American Ivy Society
provided all the ivies which are being planted according to their
Classifications with a special section for those ivies that have been
selected as "Ivy of the Year.
After several months of hard back-breaking work clearing out all the debris,
preparing the soil, planting the ivies - the Dedication Ceremony will be
held at Sugar Mill Botanical Garden on Sat., Jan. 4, 2008 at 11 a.m.
If any of you are interested in more details, please let me know and I will
email you a story, and a photo of the Boy Scout with all his badges on his
chest. I will be flying to Daytona to attend the Dedication Ceremony.
Suzanne Pierot, President
American Ivy Society
