Carlo - there have been / are being? lawsuits from some of the major news
corps demanding that google turn over profits from aggregating their work
and presenting it through the google index.  Big time copyright violations
but it's a bit of a grey area in law as I understand it and for that, it's a
pinhead with a bunch of angels in the courts.
And for those who live and die by traffic - Google's the game in town.  If
folks feel strongly about this - about protecting their "stuff" - all they
have to do is put a robots= nofollow tag on their pages and Google will not
present them in their index ( as I understand it - they may search it as
part of the Net pattern but not present it to the public in either the
primary or secondary indices).   In my world, Google is welcome to search on
anything I have.  Note that image search is a very high traffic generator
for many gardening websites (check your logs people) :-)
