Are wood chips derived from trees killed by Dutch Elm disease capable to
damaging plants if the chips are used as mulch?
We lost two 60+ foot tall elm trees to the disease and had them taken down
this fall, costing a small fortune. The tree crew was grinding the branches
into chips and loading them into big trucks, obviously to sell to garden
centers. I had them leave the chips in a huge pile, figuring that I could recoup
some of the huge expense by using the chips as mulch next spring.
Then I started thinking about disease transfer. If the chips rot over the
winter, I'm sure the pile volume will be reduced by at least a quarter. Will
this help? Or should I just get rid of the mulch?
