We live in the middle of the woods and had several very large elms die
over the years. We leave dead trees as standing snags for wildlife until
they really need to come down. Then they are cut to appropriate size and
stacked into our log fence that screens us from the development next
door. So the diseased wood has been around for decades. We still get new
elm trees from time to time and I'm not aware of DED having spread to
anything else. If you can stand the smell, elm makes a very hot-burning
firewood.
