Diana,

        You're certainly not the only one who gets a splitting headache from
the fragrance of so many gardenias, hyacinths and lilies in a convention
hall.
      Your reference to them "sucking all the oxygen out of the Convention
Hall is interesting.
    They of course didn't suck out the oxygen at all, it just felt that way
for you, since the volatile airborne oils from the enclosed gardenias closed
up your own airways and made it hard for you to get enough oxygen.
    With plant fragrances: one person's fabulous fragrance can be another's
miserable allergy. This is why I always suggest landscapers avoid planting
highly fragrant plants underneath bedroom windows.
    Myself, I love the heady smell of gardenias, but I once saw a woman go
straight into anaphylactic shock after coming into a room that was full of
them.
