Re: [GWL]: New anti-terrorism law
According to an AP story that will be widely printed tomorrow, President Bush
today (Friday 10-26) signed a "sweeping anti-terrorism bill", which gives
intelligence agencies and police "vast new powers." The bill allows police
to secretly search people's homes and business records; they may also
"eavesdrop on telephone and computer conversations." Attorney General John
Ashcroft said the Justice Department will use the new powers immediately.
''It is ...dangerous legislation ... that could end up curbing and
infringing fundamental civil rights and liberties,'' said Ralph Neas,
president of People For the American Way.
Congress did insist on a four-year time limit, despite protests by Bush &
company. Congress gets to vote at that time on whether to extend the powers.
