RE: [GWL]: Landscape trades - what do garden writers want?

Title: Message
Carol,

I would like to know why sample greenhouses are almost impossible to get when companies give other items that are similar in cost.

Also, I would like to trial more new plants.  I desperately want a Becky Towe Phlox which they are giving away to people in the UK for trial purposes but not in the US that I am aware of.

Better labeling would be good too.  I have a real problem with those Exotic Angel plants and other similar ones.  You buy the plant but it doesn't have a name and garden centers are basically a joke.  The people there need to be more informed.  If you ask them what the plant is, they say "I don't know."  What kind of service is that?

Another thing that really irritates me is this.  I went to Lowe's the other day looking for rooting medium for cinnamon cuttings I am getting.  I couldn't decide between moss (which is what they are being shipped in), perilite or a regular soiless mix designed for starting cuttings.  After much debate I asked the head sales lady what she thought.  Her answer was "What's cinnamon?  I've never heard of that before."  After explaining to her that it was the spice, she said "I didn't know you could grow that."  Give me a break!  I mean where do people think this stuff comes from?

Anyway, I explained to her it's natural growing conditions, the fact that it was being sent in moss and that I needed the best possible medium to root it in.  She said "Well, you can go look in our books up front and see if it's in those.  I think you could use regular potting soil though."  I thought doesn't she know anything.  So......maybe making sure sales people are more educated or offering better books so they can look it up.  After all, helping the customer IS what they get paid for.

Subject: [GWL]: Landscape trades - what do garden writers want?

Hi all
I'm working on an article about better communication and cooperation between landscape trades and garden writers. So here's your big chance to let them know what type of things you would like. Perhaps better labelling, maybe more opportunities to trial some new plants, I'd still like to give that new style greenhouse a try ... let me know what you think.
Thanks
Carol
