This is called a review.  It's done all the time, by reporters covering 
concerts, plays, movies, etc.  Reviewers are just audience members who have 
media at their disposal.  Readers learn which reviewers they agree with, 
and follow those recommendations.

Yes, but your words carry more credibility if you are a gardener.  I know 
some garden writers are not gardeners, and it always shows.
I have had plants sent to me that I didn't want because they required more 
water than I was willing to give them. We have metered water and are at the 
edge of a desert.
