newspapers, books and photography

These fabulous discussions are why I am a member of the list. You all provide information and issues to think about that are highly relevant to us as writers.

I'm delighted to see feedback from editors — where would we be without you? I see a small part of what editors have to deal with as a freelancer for a big city newspaper. My editor has to balance our needs and wants with what he sees the readers looking for always considering what the big guys will let him do.

I am a writer, not a photographer, so I would never consider accepting an offer for a book or mag. article that includes me providing the images. But I find it increasingly difficult to get images for what I want to write. My point-and-shoot slides from England worked well enough this year for me to squeeze two newspaper articles out and a series of lectures (the screen is more forgiving).

I toy with the idea of learning how to take real photos that would be good enough for a book, then I think "Who am I kidding?" How can I concentrate on taking in the garden, making notes on plants, design, people and also carry around a tripod and make sure I'm in the garden at 5:30 a.m. to get the best light?

This is why I recently asked for info from photogs about selling single images to a book. My next book requires photos of gardens in places where my local photog cannot go (money constraints). I appreciate all the answers I received.
