Garden publishing trends

The discussion about book trends leads me to a general question of resouces:

Are there regular surveys of the publishing industry that indicate what gardening and related topics are being sought? Where, when and by whom?

By related topics, I include ecology, conservation, outdoor entertaining, nature-related travel, etc. that might be of interest to the diversified garden writer.

Also, is there a watering hole for collaboratives of writers, photographers, designers, etc. who put together their own projects (packaging or independent publishing)?

This economic phase reminds me of "fall and winter" in the natural cycle of things -- a time to reflect, research, regroup, and survive the more severe part of the cycle. Maybe we need to look at the long term and see how this current trend fits into that trend -- and brainstorm strategies that deal with both the immediate and long term industry/market reality.

Anyone have ideas or resources we can use to start a creative strategy session?
