Re: New organic labeling scheme

This is copied from the press release attached by Lee Reich. It leaves me wondering whether garden writers now have to worry about how they write or say "organic."  -- Betty Mackey

"On October 21, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) rules take effect. We will have one standardized definition of Organic across the country joined together with a more uniform certification process that requires a paper trail of just what goes on in the field –all the way from seed ordering to point of sale. In the name of labeling consistency, the new rule notably forbids Organic farmers that refuse the government-directed certification program from using the term “Organic” even to verbally describe their produce or growing methods –at risk of a $10,000 fine per violation."

You may be interested to know that not all farmers are happy with the USDA labelling scheme. Small farmers seem unduly burdened with paperwork and filing costs. NPR did something on this topic today (www.npr.org). Part of the small farmer's reaction to this is in a new organic certification program, "Naturally Grown" (www.naturallygrown.org). A press release that I received on this is attached.
