Research tool
A very good place to do research from your computer is the National
Academy of Science Press at http://books.nap.edu/ They have thousands of
books available that can be read online. One of my favorites, which I
bought as a print book years ago, is Lost Crops of the Incas with a
fascinating number of unusual fruits and vegetables cultivated by the Incas
and nearly lost when the Conquistadors conquered the empire and destroyed
the agriculture there.
You can buy the books either as print on demand, as PDF files (whole, or
just chapters) or read them online for free. Since each page is a PDF file,
you can conceiveably save an entire book yourself, one PDF page at a time.
