Congratulation Jeff L.

Congrats to Jeff L. for the following mention of his new viewing tool, as
mentioned in HortIdeas. Anyone who was at the GWA symposium already knows
about it.

Close-Focusing ³Macroscope² Brings Your Garden Closer

Alaskan garden communicator Jeff Lowenfels has helped to
develop what he calls ³the greatest optical device ever invented
... at least for gardeners and nature enthusiasts!² Here are
some details provided by Jeff on the new Macroscope:
Binoculars and monoculars focus from infinity down to
about 10 feet, but you can¹t normally get much closer. In
fact, close focusing has always been a very difficult monster
to tame. What we have invented ... is a monocular that
focuses from infinity all the way down to 18 inches. It is,
in effect, a macro lens without the need for a camera ... and
without the need to get so close to your subject that it moves
away.... imagine standing in your garden ... not bending
down, mind you, but standing tall and looking down at the
soil. All of a sudden you can see the larvae, insects, worms,
and other soil foodweb life as if you had a mini microscope
inches away from the ground. Fan up to a few flowers and
follow the bees.... see the individual pollen particles on
their hind legs.... all without spooking the bees or yourself!
Wait! Want to see that bird on the other side of the property?
A quick twist of the focus wheel and you are there....
This device turns insect watching into the same kind of
hobby as birding. I have tested it over the past three years
at Garden Writers Conventions, and, to a person, everyone
who looks through it wants one! ...
This brand-new category of optics was invented right
here in Alaska by my friend Dr. Lorvell Shields, an avid
gardener and biologist who was frustrated by his inability
to focus down on worms, snails, and the like in his beloved
backyard marshlands. Out of this frustration came
the first Macroscope. The invention has been licensed to
Brunton, Inc.... It weighs a mere 11.3 ounces and uses 7 €
40, full multi-coating optics with great long eye relief. It
ships October 7 and can be purchased for $149 plus a $5
shipping and handling fee.
The Macroscope is available via mail order from Close to
Infinity, L.L.C. in Anchorage, Alaska (phone 907-258-1504, web
site www.closetoinfinity.com).
