Re: fall gardens

Catriona,

The best source of information about outstanding Virginia gardens is the Garden Club of Virginia, which, during Historic Garden Week, opens numerous Virginia gardens to the public.

They can be contacted at www.gcvirginia.org.  Click on Historic Garden Week, and look for a telephone number or e-mail address there.

Each year, they publish a guide about 3/4 inch thick of the gardens on the tour, which cover the entire state. Numerous gardens in Northern Virginia are always shown, including Fairfax, Loudoun, Clarke, Fauquier, Culpeper, and Frederick counties, also Orange, and Albemarle counties. And there are fabulous gardens in all of these places -- I know, I've been to them!  If they have any available, you may be able to obtain copies of past guides and then contact the owners to see if their gardens are in their glory in the fall as well as the spring.

Sorry I can't help you obtain any of the guides. At one time I had several years worth, but in a frenzy of house cleaning (i.e., you can't keep everything forever) I got rid of them. But this is absolutely the best source I can think of, and it's fabulous. If they have only library copies of their guides, perhaps you can find someone in Richmond (their headquarters) who'll be willing to photocopy the pages for the counties you're interested in and send them to you. Or perhaps for a fee the Garden Club will be willing to do this for you themselves. It's worth a try!

Washington, D.C. has a garden tour, but I have no idea who runs it.

As to Maryland, I imagine the sister counterpart to Garden Club of Virginia also has a similar program. I know there are garden tours in Montgomery County and other Maryland counties, and suspect there is perhaps a designated "garden week" there too, although I've never gone or investigated it further. Any Marylander's out there who can help?
